Grace Newsletter - 30 Hour Famine

Hi G.R.A.C.E. Youth and Parents,

Hunger kills 29,000 children each day. Yes, each day. That is 1 child every 3 seconds. The youth have launched a fund-raising campaign so they can change the world, one life at a time. Over the next few months you will read about and hear about in worship, the 30 Hour Famine campaign they will participate in the weekend of April 11-13, 2008. Their slogan for the famine is "We are the change," which is in response to the quote by Ghandi of "Be the change you want to see in the world."

**We will have a late dinner together that Friday night (April 11), and afterwards begin our fast for the next 30 hours. This is for ages 12 and up, however kids under the age of 12 may participate and skip a meal or 2 or give up something. Of course people who medically cannot do this, or have to play in a sporting event the following day do not have to fast for the entire 30 hours to participate.

**On Saturday, April 12, we will meet at the church and make sandwiches for the homeless, travel to DC and deliver them to the men and women living in the parks there. Then we will return to the church for devotions, music and a lock-in.

**The next morning, Sunday, April 13, is our youth Sunday (Famine Sunday) which will focus on hunger and how we are charged to help those in need.

**At 10:00am, Sunday, April 13, we will break the fast and invite everyone to join us. We will have a breakfast in fellowship hall between the two worship services (10:00-11:00). We will serve a "corn-mush" type meal which is consistent with what most communities who suffer from hunger consume.

Above are the major details of the weekend, now for the immediate, this Sunday, December 9, the youth will make their own T-shirts for the event. So as of this Sunday, your child will need

1) a blank T-Shirt from Michael's or AC Moore in any color.....EXCEPT BLACK. We are supplying the paints for their shirts, they only need the shirt.

2) I am attaching a letter to this email that they can use for their fundraising efforts. They should have brought a copy home last night, and they can add, edit, or whatever they need to do to make it their own. I have asked them to bring their own copy, with their information added, this Sunday, December 9.

We will have much more information coming-including proper ways to break the fast and info on how to include those who can't do the whole 30 hours. Until then, if you have any questions, please go to www.30Hourfamine.org. Below is a brief excerpt from their site.

Thanks for helping!!
God Bless,
Nancy S

What does it take to help a hungry child?

Only $30 a month, just $1 a day, will help feed and care for a child. You can start by asking twelve people they know to donate $30 - that's one person for each month of the year. When you've done that, you will have raised $360, enough money to feed and provide necessary care to a child for a whole year.

Every year, thousands of groups in more than 21 countries - over 1 million teens - unite with one goal in mind: to help children living in some of the most deplorable conditions on earth.
