Prayers
and Thoughts for Reflection
There
are hands that help and comfort, I
guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.
When you Find a need and fill it. But
when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your
right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your
Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. Live
simply that others might simply live. We
can do no great things, only small things with great love. The
first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If
I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But…the
good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop to help
this man, what will happen to him?” Nobody
made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only
do a little. The
only gift is a portion of thyself. The
purpose of life is not to be happy – but to matter, to be productive,
to be useful, to have it make some difference that you have lived
at all. Act
as if what you do makes a difference. It does. May
God grant you always Dear Lord, Help me to venture off the fast track and to see with new eyes today. Place me on the beckoning path you have planned for me. Motivate me when I fear failure, push me into it. Remind me that simple acts of love are often as small as a grain of sand, but put together they make beautiful dunes and shores. Show me how to make a difference and how to see you in every face I see. Amen If
anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so
that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. How
wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting
to improve the world. Kindness
has been described in many ways. It is the poetry of the heart, the
music of the world. It is a golden chain which binds society together.
It is a fountain of gladness. Kind hearts are more than coronets.
Kind words produce their own beautiful image in man’s soul.
Everyone knows the pleasure of receiving a kind look, a warm greeting,
a hand held out in time of need. And such gestures can be made at
so little expense, yet they bring such dividends to the investor. They
might not need me; but they might. I’ll let my head be just
in sight; A smile as small as mine might be precisely their necessity. Do
not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have
entertained angels without knowing it. When
your own burden is heaviest, you can always lighten a little some
other burden. At the times when you cannot see God, there is still
open to you this sacred possibility, to show God; for it is the love
and kindness of human hearts through which the divine reality comes
home to men, whether they name it or not. Let this thought, then,
stay with you; there may be times when you cannot find help, but there
is no time when you cannot give help. In
about the same degree as you are helpful, you will be happy. When
you dig another out of their troubles, you find a place to bury your
own. I
thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered
me faithful, appointing me to his service. If
I can do some good today, If
I can right a human wrong, If
I can aid one in distress, God
has not called us to see through each other, but to see each other
through. Each
one of us should use whatever gift he has received to serve others,
faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms. He
has the right to criticize who has the heart to help. The
greatest object in the universe, says a certain philosopher, is a
good man struggling with adversity; yet there is a still greater,
which is the good man that comes to relieve it. If
you have no will to change it, you have no right to criticize it. He
who gives when he is asked has waited too long. Wherever
a man turns he can find someone who needs him. Dear God, help me to ask less and to give more. Show me how to comfort, to encourage, and to bring healing. Whenever You come to me and whatever You ask of me, let me be ready and eager to open the door in welcome. Help me to make time to serve. Help me to take time to touch someone’s life today. Help me to take time to listen, so that your love flows through me and I am aware of your Spirit within me. Help me recognize your presence, in any need for my action. Amen The
best cure for worry, depression, melancholy, brooding, is to go deliberately
forth and try to lift with one’s sympathy the gloom of somebody
else. If
we could all hear one another’s prayers, God might be relieved
of some of his burdens. Dare
to reach out your hand into the darkness, to pull another hand into
the light. If
I can stop one heart from breaking, May
the road rise up to meet you: It
is the greatest of all mistakes to do nothing because you can only
do little – do what you can. The
greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches,
but to reveal to him his own. Nobody
can do everything, but everyone can do something. One
song can spark a moment, I
expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness
I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me
do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way
again. I
am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something.
And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do. Open my eyes dear Lord, that I may see the needs around me. Show me all the ways I can help. Give me words of comfort. Show me creative ways to do that which I think is impossible. Take what I know and place it with what I don’t and together make what I thought could never be done. Show me that though I am small, I am mighty in possibility for when I am weak, you make me strong. Amen What
we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for
others and the world remains and is immortal. The
only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have
sought and found how to serve. You
will find, as you look back upon your life, that the moments that
stand out are the moments when you have done things for others. We
make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. Do
not let what you cannot do interfere with what you can do. When
you are tired and discouraged from fruitless efforts. . . I
see your hand, Lord, in everything around me, Lord,
hold our troops in your loving hands. You go
no where by accident. O
God, help me to touch someone today with my eyes, my words,
