Prayers and Thoughts for Reflection
October 2006

Do not forget to do good and to
share with others,
for with such sacrifices
God is pleased.
Hebrews 13:16

Suppose a brother or sister is
without clothes and daily food.
If one of you says to him, “Go,
I wish you well; keep warm and
well fed,” but does nothing about
his physical needs, what good is it?
James 2:15–16

I tell you the truth, anyone who
gives you a cup of water in my name
because you belong to Christ
will certainly not lose his reward.
Mark 9:41

PRAYING HANDS

There are hands that help and comfort,
Hands that plan and teach,
Hands that rest and hands that strive
For a goal just out of reach,
Hands that grasp and hands that give,
Hands that work and play,
Friendly hands and loving hands
That soothes life's cares away.
But praying hands are dearest
In the sight of God above
For in their sweet and earnest clasp
Are reverence and love.
No hands can do an unkind act
Nor cause another care
Nor sin against Our Father's love
When they are clasped in prayer.
Author Unknown

I guide you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths. When you Find a need and fill it.
Ruth Stafford Peale

But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.
Matthew 6:3–4

Live simply that others might simply live.
Elizabeth Seaton

We can do no great things, only small things with great love.

The first question which the priest and the Levite asked was: “If I stop to help this man, what will happen to me?” But…the good Samaritan reversed the question: “If I do not stop to help this man, what will happen to him?”

Leo Rosten

Act as if what you do makes a difference. It does.
William James

May God grant you always
A sunbeam to warm you
A moonbeam to charm you
A sheltering angel
So nothing can harm you
Laughter to cheer you
Faithful friends near you
And whatever you pray
Heaven to hear you.
Author Unknown

Dear Lord, Help me to venture off the fast track and to see with new eyes today. Place me on the beckoning path you have planned for me. Motivate me when I fear failure, push me into it. Remind me that simple acts of love are often as small as a grain of sand, but put together they make beautiful dunes and shores. Show me how to make a difference and how to see you in every face I see. Amen

If anyone serves, he should do it with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ.
1 Peter 4:11

How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world.
Anne Frank

Kindness has been described in many ways. It is the poetry of the heart, the music of the world. It is a golden chain which binds society together. It is a fountain of gladness. Kind hearts are more than coronets. Kind words produce their own beautiful image in man’s soul. Everyone knows the pleasure of receiving a kind look, a warm greeting, a hand held out in time of need. And such gestures can be made at so little expense, yet they bring such dividends to the investor.
The War Cry

They might not need me; but they might. I’ll let my head be just in sight; A smile as small as mine might be precisely their necessity.
Emily Dickinson

Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it.
Hebrews 13:2

When your own burden is heaviest, you can always lighten a little some other burden. At the times when you cannot see God, there is still open to you this sacred possibility, to show God; for it is the love and kindness of human hearts through which the divine reality comes home to men, whether they name it or not. Let this thought, then, stay with you; there may be times when you cannot find help, but there is no time when you cannot give help.
George S. Merriam

In about the same degree as you are helpful, you will be happy.
Karl Reiland

One must be poor to know the luxury of giving.
George Eliot

When you dig another out of their troubles, you find a place to bury your own.

Tom Broka

I have found the paradox that if I love until it hurts, then there is no hurt, but only more love.
Mother Teresa

If I can do some good today,
If I can serve along life’s way,
If I can something helpful say,
Lord, show me how.

If I can right a human wrong,
If I can help to make one strong,
If I can cheer with smile or song,
Lord, show me how.

If I can aid one in distress,
If I can make a burden less,
If I can spread more happiness,
Lord, show me how.
Amen

Dear God, help me to ask less and to give more. Show me how to comfort, to encourage, and to bring healing. Whenever You come to me and whatever You ask of me, let me be ready and eager to open the door in welcome. Help me to make time to serve. Help me to take time to touch someone’s life today. Help me to take time to listen, so that your love flows through me and I am aware of your Spirit within me. Help me recognize your presence, in any need for my action. Amen

One flower can wake the dream.
One tree can start a forest,
One bird can herald spring.
One smile begins a friendship,
One handclasp lifts a soul.
One star can guide a ship at sea,
One word can frame the goal.
One vote can change a nation,
One sunbeam lights a room.
One candle wipes out darkness,
One laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start each journey,
One word must start each prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
One touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
One heart can know what’s true,
One life can make the difference,
You see, it’s up to you!

I expect to pass through life but once. If therefore, there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do to any fellow being, let me do it now, and not defer or neglect it, as I shall not pass this way again.

Edward Everett Hale

Open my eyes dear Lord, that I may see the needs around me. Show me all the ways I can help. Give me words of comfort. Show me creative ways to do that which I think is impossible. Take what I know and place it with what I don’t and together make what I thought could never be done. Show me that though I am small, I am mighty in possibility for when I am weak, you make me strong. Amen
