Prayers and Thoughts for Reflection
March 2007

You are all sons of God
through faith in Christ Jesus.
Galatians 3:26

The fruit of the Spirit is
love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness.
Galatians 5:22

Consequently, faith comes
from hearing the message,
and the message is heard
through the word of Christ.
Romans 10:17

PRAYING HANDS

There are hands that help and comfort,
Hands that plan and teach,
Hands that rest and hands that strive
For a goal just out of reach,
Hands that grasp and hands that give,
Hands that work and play,
Friendly hands and loving hands
That soothes life's cares away.
But praying hands are dearest
In the sight of God above
For in their sweet and earnest clasp
Are reverence and love.
No hands can do an unkind act
Nor cause another care
Nor sin against Our Father's love
When they are clasped in prayer.

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.
Hebrews 11:1

Today is a new day, Lord, show me how to spend my time. Guide me, inspire me - empower me. Give me the courage to face each day’s pressing problems. Help me to remember to ask you for help. Provide me a quiet confidence that I may be a positive example of your vision. Amen.

Faith is believing in things when common sense tells you not to.
George Seaton

Faith is not belief without proof, but trust without reservations.
Elton Trueblood

Faith is like radar that sees through the fog.
Corrie Ten Boom

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in him. He will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream. It does not fear when heat comes, its leaves are always green. It has no worries in a year of drought and never fails to bear fruit.
Jeremiah 17:7-8

Faith is taking the first step even when you don't see the whole staircase.
Martin Luther King Jr.

Faith is an act of rational choice which determines us to act as if certain things were true and in the confident expectation that they will prove to be true.
William R. Inge

Reason is our soul's left hand, Faith her right.
John Donne

Heavenly Father, lead me down the path you would like me to follow. Show me how to spend my time and not to waste it. Strengthen me with the power of prayer and refresh me with the words of Scripture. I thank you for your invitation to spend time with you. Amen

Fear knocked at the door. Faith answered. And lo, no one was there.
Author Unknown

Jesus touched their eyes and said, "According to your faith it will be done to you."
Matthew 9:29

Fear imprisons, faith liberates;
Fear paralyzes, faith empowers;
Fear disheartens, faith encourages;
Fear sickens, faith heals;
Fear makes useless, faith makes serviceable – most of all,
Fear puts hopelessness at the heart of life, while faith rejoices in its God.
Harry Emerson Fosdick

In Thee, O Lord, I have put my trust. Let me feel your hand on my shoulder. When tasks seem impossible, show me what is possible. When depressed over what remains to be done, remind me to be thankful for all that has been accomplished. When I am tired, warm me. Make me as reliable as sunrise after sunset. Help me become the most I can be for you. Amen.

Faith is like a boomerang; begin using what you have - and it comes back to you in greater measure.
Charles L. Allen

To me faith means not worrying.
John Dewey

Faith is courage; it is creative while despair is always destructive.
David S. Muzzey

Faith is the bird that sings when the dawn is still dark.
Rabindranath Tagore

Be like the bird that, passing on her flight awhile on boughs too slight, feels them give way beneath her, and yet sings, knowing that she hath wings.
Victor Hugo

We live by faith, not by sight.
2 Corinthians 5:7

This capacity to believe is the most significant and fundamental human faculty, and the most important thing about a man is what he believes in the depth of his being. This is the thing that makes him what he is; the thing that organizes him and feeds him; the thing that keeps him going in the face of untoward circumstances; the thing that gives him resistance and drive. Let neutrality, confusion, indifference, or skepticism enter this inner place, and the very springs of life will cease to flow.
Hugh Stevenson Tigner

Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens.
J.R.R. Tolkien

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.
1 Corinthians 16:13

Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother.
Kahlil Gibran

Faith is reason grown courageous.
Sherwood Eddy

Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.
Ephesians 6:10

He who has faith has... an inward reservoir of courage, hope, confidence, calmness, and assuring trust that all will come out well - even though to the world it may appear to come out most badly.
B.C. Forbes

Faith is spiritualized imagination.
Henry Ward Beecher

God always gives us strength enough, and sense enough, for everything He wants us to do.
John Ruskin

Faith is putting all your eggs in God's basket, then counting your blessings before they hatch.
Ramona C. Carroll

If you doubt there is a God, look deep into a rose;
See the velvet petals from the folded bud unclose;
Note the tint and texture and the lovely coloring;
Could blind Nature of itself evolve so fair a thing?

Feel the softness of the petal, breathe the fragrant scent;
Need you waste another thought on further argument?
Here is proof of a Creator: God made manifest;
In this little rose we see divinity expressed.
Patience Strong

Whoso draws nigh to God one step through doubtings dim, God will advance a mile in blazing light to him.

Gracious God, In this season of Lent touch me with your quiet voice of calm and grace. Live in me and energize me that I may not only touch life, but be touched by it. You know the secret plan for the world using me and my hands, help me to listen and act. Give me faith to tackle the impossible. Renew my Spirit, so I will use my time wisely and accomplish all that you have planned for me to do. Amen.

O world, thou choosest not the better part!
It is not wisdom to be only wise,
And on the inward vision close the eyes;
But it is wisdom to believe the heart.
Columbus found a world, and had no chart
Save one that faith deciphered in the skies;
To trust the soul’s invincible surmise
Was all his science and his only art.
Our knowledge is a torch of smoky pine
That lights the pathway but one step ahead
Across a void of mystery and dread.
Bid, then, the tender light of faith to shine
By which alone the mortal heart is led
Unto the thinking of the thought divine.
George Santayana

Faith makes the discords of the present the harmonies of the future.
Robert Collyer

Feed your faith and your fears will starve to death.
Author Unknown

Every tomorrow has two handles. We can take hold of it by the handle of anxiety, or by the handle of faith.
Author Unknown

Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Romans 5:1

Finish every day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense. This day is all that is good and fair. It is too dear, with its hopes and invitations, to waste a moment on yesterdays.
Ralph Waldo Emerson

The light of God surrounds me
The love of God enfolds me
The power of God protects me
The presence of God watches over me.
Wherever I am, God is.
Author Unknown

Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, move from here to there, and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you."
Matthew 17:20

Dear God, for another day, for another minute, for another chance to live and serve you, I am grateful. Please keep me free from fear of the future, from anxiety about tomorrow, from bitterness towards anyone, from cowardice in the face of danger, from laziness in my daily work, from failure before opportunity, from weakness when your power is at hand. But fill me with love that knows no bounds, with sympathy that reaches all, with courage that cannot be shaken, with faith strong enough for the darkness, with strength sufficient for my tasks. Be with me for another day, and use me as you will. Amen
The Pilgrim’s Prayer Book

May the road rise up to meet you:
May the wind be always at your back,
The sun shine warm upon your face,
The rain fall soft upon your fields,
And until we meet again
May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
Author Unknown

Unknown, but not uncharted, tomorrow waits for our arrival - a day designed, a place prepared with tender care by the One who goes before us … Let us walk with faith behind him in the footprints of his love.
Psalm 37:23

Those who trust in the Lord for help
will find their strength renewed.
They will rise on wings like eagles;
they will run and not get weary;
they will walk and not grow weak.
Isaiah 40:31

Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.
Protect them as they protect us.
Bless them and their families for the selfless acts
they perform for us in our time of need.
I ask this in the name of Jesus, our Lord and Savior. Amen
.

You go no where by accident.
Wherever you go, God is sending you.
Wherever you are, God has put you there.
He has a purpose in your being there.
Christ who dwells in you has something
He wants to do through you where you are.
Believe this and go in His grace and love and power.
Richard C. Halverson, Chaplain of the United States Senate

O God, help me to touch someone today with my eyes, my words,
my smile, my voice, my laughter, Your word.
Change my life, so I can make a difference.
Let my actions bring someone closer to you.
Help me to make Christmas last all year.
Help me to use my gifts for Jesus.
