Prayers and Thoughts for Reflection
July 2007

A good name is better than
precious ointment
Ecclesiastes 7:1

If God be for us,
who can be against us?
Romans 8:31

Don’t copy the behavior
and customs of this world,
but let God transform you
into a new person by
changing the way you think.
Romans 12:2

I will never leave you
or forsake you.
Hebrews 13:5

PRAYING HANDS

There are hands that help and comfort,
Hands that plan and teach,
Hands that rest and hands that strive
For a goal just out of reach,
Hands that grasp and hands that give,
Hands that work and play,
Friendly hands and loving hands
That soothes life's cares away.
But praying hands are dearest
In the sight of God above
For in their sweet and earnest clasp
Are reverence and love.
No hands can do an unkind act
Nor cause another care
Nor sin against Our Father's love
When they are clasped in prayer.

But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure. It is also peace loving, gentle at all times, and willing to yield to others. It is full of mercy and good deeds.

Leave results to God.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning

William Shakespeare, Hamlet

Self-respect knows no considerations.
Mahatma Gandhi

No man who is occupied in doing a very difficult thing, and doing it very well, ever loses his self-respect.
George Bernard Shaw

Self-respect cannot be hunted.  It cannot be purchased.  It is never for sale.  It cannot be fabricated out of public relations.  It comes to us when we are alone, in quiet moments, in quiet places, when we suddenly realize that, knowing the good, we have done it; knowing the beautiful, we have served it; knowing the truth we have spoken it.
Whitney Griswold

If you want to be respected by others the great thing is to respect yourself.
Only by that, only by self-respect will you compel others to respect you.
Fyodor Dostoyevsky

I never did, or countenanced, in public life, a single act inconsistent with the strictest good faith; having never believed there was one code of morality for a public, and another for a private man.
Thomas Jefferson, 1809

Would that there were an award for people who come to understand the concept of enough.  Good enough.  Successful enough.  Thin enough.  Rich enough.  Socially responsible enough.  When you have self-respect, you have enough.
Gail Sheehy

Never violate the sacredness of your individual self-respect.
Theodore Parker

To the man who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness. . . .
Ecclesiastes 2:26

Self-respect is the cornerstone of all virtue.
John Herschel

It is the highest form of self-respect to admit our errors and mistakes and make amends for them.  To make a mistake is only an error in judgment, but to adhere to it when it is discovered shows infirmity of character.
Dale E. Turner

Dear Lord, help me to see you moving in the day-to-day activities of my life. When the pace becomes frantic, slow me down and give me perspective. Please lift me up keeping me steady and sure. When I become weary, let me persevere turning to You. You are my strength and my protector. Whatever my circumstances, let me look to You for my strength and salvation. Amen

A man cannot be comfortable without his own approval.
Mark Twain, "What Is Man?", 1906

The righteousness of the blameless makes a straight way for them, but the wicked are brought down by their own wickedness.

Marcus Aurelius

Conscience is that still, small voice that is sometimes too loud for comfort.
Bert Murray

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
James 1:5

I care not so much what I am to others as what I am to myself.  I will be rich by myself, and not by borrowing.

The foolishness of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than man’s strength.
1 Corinthians 1:25

I thank Thee first because I was never robbed before; second, because although they took my purse they did not take my life; third, because although they took my all, it was not much; and fourth because it was I who was robbed, and not I who robbed.
Matthew Henry

Have no fear of robbers or murderers.  They are external dangers, petty dangers.  We should fear ourselves.  Prejudices are the real robbers; vices the real murders.  The great dangers are within us.  Why worry about what threatens our heads or purses?  Let us think instead of what threatens our souls.
Victor Hugo

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

If honor be your clothing, the suit will last a lifetime; but if clothing be your honor, it will soon be worn threadbare.
William Arnot

Antoine de Saint-Exupery

Every human being has... an attendant spirit.... If it does not always tell us what to do, it always cautions us what not to do.
Lydia M. Child

Chester W. Nimitz

Silently, invisibly, another day appears. Thank you Lord for the gift of life and the stopovers between youth and growing old. Thank you for the yesterdays and the tomorrows. Thank you for family and for friends. Thank you for memories and for dreams. Thank you for courage and for hope. Thank you for taking me down known paths and for leading me into the unknown. Thank you for the projects that you throw in my lap. Thank you for working in my life and calling me to work. Increase my vision, Lord. In the brightest moments and the darkest hours, help me to give thanks. In the face of fortune and misfortune, let me give thanks. In the presence of pleasure and pain, remind me to give thanks. You have thought me that lessons and blessings are found not just in the light – but in the darkness.  Amen

Your word, O Lord, is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

both now and forevermore.
