"Remember those in prison
as if you were their fellow prisoners,
and those who are mistreated
as if you yourselves were suffering."
Hebrews 13:3 NIV
MISSION
JAIL MINISTRY
Jail and Prison Ministry at FPC is coordinated through Good News Jail and Prison Ministry [www.goodnewsjail.org] whose national headquarters is located in Richmond Virginia. One or two chaplains are provided to participating jails in Virginia and other states.
Volunteers who have been trained in security by the Office of the Sheriff at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center (ADC) provide various direct Christian services to the inmates, both in the ADC and in the Pre-Release Center (PRC). FPC volunteers interview inmates who request Christian mentors, serve as mentors, provide one-on-one counseling, distribute Bibles and religious books, and lead women in Bible study. Cards and stamps contributed by members and friends of FPC are gratefully received by inmates.
In addition, AfterCare givers are trained to work with inmates and the newly released to ease their transition back into the community. Through the Angel Tree program of Prison Fellowship [www.prisonfellowship.org] the FPC congregation provides gifts to children of prisoners.
Many lives are being touched by Jesus Christ through the presence and dedication of those who volunteer in His name. Taking the time to listen and pray with inmates, point them to pertinent passages in the Bible and encourage them to participate in worship and Bible study helps the incarcerated to know that as believers their salvation is assured and they are not alone.
Civilian and sworn staff in the ADC/PRC also appreciate a personal greeting, a kind word, an invitation to pray or receive Christian materials as well as the opportunity to share their own faith. The mission of Good News Jail and Prison Ministry (GNJPM) extends to all: inmates, staff, and volunteers. While GNJPM is Evangelical Christian, it must address the spiritual needs of all inmates and staff. FPC's annual budgeted gift supports that mission.
