Lighting of the Christ Candle
Look! Here is the light that reminds us
That Christ shines among us;
For Christ is the light that lightens the whole world,
And Christ is the light that brightens our worship.

Call to Worship (responsive) Henry Brinton
L: I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;
P: I will sing praise to my God while I have being.
L: May my meditation be pleasing to God, for I rejoice in the Lord.
P: Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord! (Psalm 104:33-35)

* Hymn 319 Spirit

* Call to Confession Jessica Tate
L: The Holy Spirit comes to wash away our sin and heal our wounded spirits. Let us confess our sin together.

* Prayer of Confession (unison)
Almighty God, you poured your Spirit upon gathered disciples, creating bold tongues, open ears, and a new community of faith. We confess that we hold back the force of your Spirit among us. We do not listen for your word of grace, speak the good news of your love, or live as a people made one in Christ. Have mercy on us, O God. Transform our timid lives by the power of your Spirit, and fill us with a flaming desire to be your faithful people, doing your will for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Time for silent confession.)

* Assurance of Forgiveness
L: People of God, the Spirit is here in healing power. Your sins are forgiven.
P: Let us celebrate the new life of God's Holy Spirit. Amen.

* Response to Our Assurance
Gloria Patri (#579, The Hymnal)
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, amen.

Proclaim God’s Word
Anthem Be Thou My Vision (8:45)
Sing to the Lord a New Song (11:15)
Sanctuary Choir, Kenneth Martin, Director

Prayer for Illumination
Lou Major (8:45); Frances Bowen (11:15)

Scripture Lesson Acts 2:1-21
1When the day of Pentecost had come, the apostles were all together in one place. 2And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, ‘Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs – in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.’ 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, ‘What does this mean?’ 13But others sneered and said, ‘They are filled with new wine.’ 14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: 17“In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to God.

Sermon Catching the Wind Henry Brinton

* Affirmation of Faith
We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! Amen. (A Brief Statement of Faith, Presbyterian Church, USA)

* Prayer of Dedication (unison)

NOTES ON WORSHIP
OUR NEW ORDER FOR WORSHIP is being inaugurated today. This is not meant to change the feel of our service; it merely alters the order of certain elements for the following reasons: We want our children to hear the reading of the scripture. Scripture is the story of our faith; so that the children may hear these stories and a Conversation rooted in them, the Conversation with Children now comes after the Scripture Lesson. We want our service to begin with a call to worship. We now begin with a focus on God and later, as a response to the Word heard in the service, focus on our life together. This also gives late-comers a chance to hear our announcements. We want to include an Affirmation of Faith, in words ranging from the ancient Nicene Creed to the modern Brief Statement of Faith, to unite us as one body. The staff and Worship Ministry will be open to hearing about your experience with this new order for worship.

THE FLOWERS in the sanctuary this morning are given to the glory of God and in honor of Dan Bauer’s birthday, in loving memory of Pete Bauer’s mom, and in honor of all mothers on Mother’s Day.

Paul McKlveen, of First Presbyterian Church, Neenah, Wisconsin, provides two moods for worship in the music at 8:45 – rhythmic and joyous in the Prelude, fervent and reflective in the Anthem. Robert Lau’s Anthem at 11:15 uses mixed meters to give its text, drawn from Psalms 148, 149 and 150, freshness and vitality.

TODAY AT FPC

NEWS OF FPC
OUR SUMMER worship schedule, with one service of worship at 9:30 a.m., begins on Sunday, May 25.

Glebe Sunday is set for June 1 this year. We will have a casual, outdoor service at 9:30 a.m. – bring your lawn chairs, blankets, parasols and fans! After the service, plan to celebrate the beginning of summer and enjoy food and fellowship with other FPC members at a lunch, sponsored by the Member Connections Ministry and served on the grounds.

SERVICE and STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
YOU KNOW how difficult it is to complete a project well without the right tools. For us, though, that’s just a temporary inconvenience until we get to Home Depot to buy what we need. For poor people in third world countries lacking mega-stores, having the right tools can result in significant improvement in the standard of living. Please give your donation to the Church World Service’s Tools of Hope program, sponsored at FPC by Presbyterian Women, today.

Former FPC member Carolyn Thalman is celebrating 50 years of living well with diabetes by walking with her family and friends in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Walk to Cure Diabetes at Landsdowne Conference Center on Sunday, June 1. If you wish to join them, contact Carolyn or Marian Lokay for details. You may also be a “virtual” member of the team. To register or support a walker, visit www.walk.jdrf.org and click on Walk to Cure Diabetes. Donations in the form of a check made out to JDRF may be sent to Carolyn at PO Box 2174, Winchester VA 22604.

Give your Heart to a Child. Can you set an extra place at your dinner table? Do you have a safe place for a child to sleep? Volunteer Emergency Families For Children needs volunteers willing to provide short term (1-21 days) emergency shelter to children who are victims of abuse or neglect. You choose the age, gender, and length of stay for each placement. Please contact Kym Ludwig at kludwig@vefc.org or call 800-756-6167 for additional information. Visit our website at www.vefc.org.

ON THE CALENDAR
THE MEMBERSHIP CONNECTIONS MINISTRY is sponsoring a social for all adults on Saturday, May 24 at 7:30 p.m. at the home of Lee & Kim Phillips. Come and enjoy an evening of fellowship and fun. Please RSVP to the Phillips.

A RECIPE FOR HOPE: The recent 30 Day Famine experienced by the youth of FPC energized many of us to help do something about world hunger. Now, Bread for the World is offering us a chance to do more. To understand the causes for the recent increase in world hunger and how you can take action to help, visit www.bread.org and sign up for “A Recipe for Hope: Responding to the Global Hunger Crisis.” For more details, check the poster on the kiosk.

UPCOMING GOLDEN AGE Ministry events include lunch and a tour of the new Fairfax City Regional Library on May 18, a review of the Ministry’s activities to date on June 1, and a workshop on Balance and Aging on June 12. For complete details regarding these programs please see the FPC website or the May Octagon. Tickets for the 5-hour Balance and Aging program are on sale in the narthex on Sunday mornings.

LACE UP YOUR RUNNING SHOES! Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to join “Team FPC” for the 2nd Annual Run to End Domestic Violence at Fort Washington National Park in Maryland on Sat, May 17 at 8 a.m. The $20 entry fee benefits a worthy cause – forms are available on the kiosk. Contact Mike Watson.

A BAPTISM CONFERENCE for persons desiring baptism for themselves or their children will be held Tue, May 20 at 6:45 p.m. in the multipurpose room. Please call the church office at 703 273-5300 if you plan to attend.

COMMUNITY EVENTS
LUNCH ‘N LIFE for individuals 50 years old or better will be held at St. Mary of Sorrows Church in Fairfax Station at noon on Thur, May 15. The program will include a tour of this historic church. Please call Faye Quesenberry at 703 620-0161 by May 8 for reservations; the cost is $8.
