Mission-Minded, Small-Group Centered

8:45 & 11:15 am Services of Worship

Gathering Music Hosanna
[Verse 1] I see the King of glory coming down the clouds with fire;
The whole earth shakes, the whole earth shakes.
I see His love and mercy washing over all our sin.
The people sing, the people sing:

[Chorus] Hosanna, hosanna ,hosanna in the highest ..(x2)

[Verse 2] I see a generation rising up to take their place
With selfless faith, with selfless faith.
I see a near revival stirring as we pray and seek;
We're on our knees, we're on our knees.
[Chorus]
[Bridge] Heal my heart and make it clean; open up my eyes to the things unseen.
Show me how to love like You have loved me. Break my heart for what breaks Yours.
Everything I am for Your Kingdom's cause, as I walk from earth into eternity.
[Chorus]
Welcome and Announcements Matt Sparacino, Jessica Bowden

The Lighting of the Christ Candle

* Call to Worship Ndidi Obasi
L: Almighty God, we gather here this morning with thankful hearts,
P: Thankful for the many blessings You have given us.
L: We gather here this morning to praise your name,
P: And to be Your body in a world that desperately needs us.
L: We have the means to make a difference,
P: Please give us the will, O God.

* Song Come, Now is the Time to Worship
Come, now is the time to worship; Come, now is the time to give your heart.
Come, just as you are to worship; Come, just as you are before your God, come. [Repeat Verse]

[Chorus] One day evry tongue will confess you are God, one day evry knee will bow;
Still the greatest treasure remains for those who gladly choose you now [Repeat Verse]

* Call to Confession
P: Gracious God, we realize that our hearts fall short of what you desire them to be. We say we want to help the needy and feed the hungry, but are often too wrapped up in our own lives to care for the needs of others. We spend more time trying to achieve more for ourselves when we should be focused on those who are much less fortunate. God, we realize that with our faith comes responsibility. We know we should love our neighbor as ourselves, but do not put our knowledge into action. Heal our hearts and make them clean, open our eyes to things unseen, break our hearts for what breaks yours and help us to be all you want us to be in your kingdom. Amen. (Time for silent reflection.)
* Assurance of Forgiveness
L: Dear Friends, we can believe what the scripture tells us in 1 John: if we confess our sins; God, who is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness. Through Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
P: Thanks be to God!

Down to the River to Pray
As I went down in the river to pray, studying about that good ol' way;
And who shall wear the starry crown? Good Lord show me the way!
O sisters let's go down, let's go down, come on down.
O sisters let's go down, down in the river to pray
[Repeat, substituting brothers, fathers, mothers, sinners for sisters]

We Are the Change

Song Thankful
[Congregation join on chorus] So for tonight we pray for what we know can be.
And on this day we hope for what we still can't see.
It's up to us to be the change, and even though we all can still do more
There's so much to be thankful for.

* Song Mighty to Save
Everyone needs compassion, love that’s never failing. Let mercy fall on me.
Everyone needs forgiveness, the kindness of a Savior, the hope of nations.
Savior! He can move the mountains.
My God is mighty to save, He is mighty to save
Forever! Author of salvation. He rose and conquered the grave.
Jesus conquered the grave.
So take me as You find me, all my fears and failures. Fill my life again.
I give my life to follow everything I believe in. Now I surrender.
Shine Your light and let the whole world see.
We’re singing for the glory of the risen King.

* Benediction Matt Sparacino

THE FLOWERS in the sanctuary this morning are donated in memory of Ed Gross on the occasion of this birthday Apr 8 by his children Sallie, Ed & Lisa.

IMPROVING OUR ORDER FOR WORSHIP. Pentecost Sunday is the birthday of the church, when we remember the gift of the Holy Spirit to the apostles (Acts 2:1-21). This Pentecost Sunday, May 11, certain elements of the service will be reordered to enhance our worship. The FPC staff and Worship Ministry want you to know this is not meant to change the feel of our service, but to alter the order of particular elements for the following reasons: We want our children to hear the reading of the scripture. Scripture is the story of our faith; we want the children to hear these stories and a Conversation rooted in them. To accomplish this, the Conversation with Children will be moved to a point after the Scripture Lesson. We want our service to begin with a call to worship. Currently, the service starts with announcements that pertain to the life of the church rather than the worship of God. We want to begin with a focus on God and later, as a response to the Word heard in the service, focus on our life together. Moving announcements also gives late-comers a chance to hear this news. We want to include an Affirmation of Faith in each service to unite us as one body. Except for baptismal Sundays, when we say the Apostles’ Creed, we rarely stand as one community and affirm what we believe. The inclusion of an Affirmation of Faith will enable us to do this, in words ranging from the ancient Nicene Creed to the modern Brief Statement of Faith. The staff and Worship Ministry will be open to hearing about your experience with this new order for worship.

JOIN MICHELLE FINCHER in a celebration of her ordination as a minister of the Presbyterian Church (USA) at FPC at 3 p.m. on Sun, Apr 27.

FPC RECYCLES! Any and all articles made of glass, aluminum, plastic or paper may now be placed together in the recycling containers found throughout the church. The materials do not need to be separated, but please empty liquids from bottles, cans and cups before placing them in the bins. Thank you for helping us care for God’s creation!

THE MUSIC MINSTRY Vision statement is available for your review on the kiosk in the narthex extension. This statement will also appear in the May issue of The Octagon.

SERVICE and STEWARDSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
THE LARDER is bare and the need is great: Requests for food assistance in the past year are up 30 percent nationwide, according to a recent article in The Washington Post. Please don’t forget to bring your donations to FPC’s Food Drive next Sun, Apr 20. Many hungry families will thank you.

REBUILDING TOGETHER is Sat, Apr 26. Help us make a difference in the life of Mrs. O’Brien of Falls Church. Please contact Sal Sparacino at ssparacino@rossindinc.com, Mac Mercer or Kevin Strickler with questions. To confirm your availability, please complete the form on the kiosk and put it in the offering.

IF YOU MISSED the opportunity to help with the recent Glebe clean-up, please schedule some time to help on the morning of Sat, May 10, when we will plant annual flowers. If you can dig just a few small holes, you can help make a big impression on our Glebe all summer! Our volunteers forces have been seriously depleted of late, so newcomers are most welcome.

THE 2008 NOMINATING COMMITTEE needs help identifying the next leaders of FPC. We seek members ready to answer God’s call to serve as Elders, Deacons and Trustees. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please fill out the FPC nomination form found on the kiosk in the narthex, or e-mail Lee Phillips.

HOSPITALITY & WELCOME: The Deacons are looking for church members to help them welcome new members to FPC. If you are interested in welcoming a new member to our church family, please get in contact with one of the deacons from your parish, or e-mail deacons@fairfaxpresby.com.

ABENDMUSIK is a German word meaning “evening music.” The word refers to a historic set of concerts that inspired Johann Sebastian Bach and others. We hope our Abendmusik program next Sun, Apr 20 at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary will inspire our congregation and deepen our faith. Our youth Chapel Choir will open the concert, followed by selected choruses from Handel’s Messiah describing the Christhood of Jesus, presented by The Sanctuary Choir. Plan to attend with your whole family as well as friends. The concert is free, but an offering will be received to support the music program at FPC. Childcare will be provided.

DESSERTS NEEDED! Various goodies are needed for a reception in appreciation of FPC’s fine choirs after the Abendmusik concert mentioned above. The Worship Ministry is also privileged to be hosting a reception in honor of Michelle Fincher’s ordination on April 27 and will need donations of desserts, sandwiches, fruit, cheese and healthy finger food for that, as well as willing helpers for both receptions. Please contact Michelle Coon or Serena Mercer.

FREE PLANTS: The two palms in the narthex extension are in need of a good home. If you have the space to house them, please take them away at your convenience!
