The Lighting of the Christ Candle

Call to Worship (responsive) Carol Radden
L: Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving and worship.
P: And what does God require from us:
L: We must let justice roll down like waters,
P: and righteousness like an everlasting stream.

#* Praise Song Come, Now is the Time to Worship B Doerksen
Refrain: Come, now is the time to worship; Come, now is the time to give your heart.
Come, just as you are to worship; Come, just as you are before your God. Come.
Verse: One day ev’ry tongue will confess You are God; One day ev’ry knee will bow.
Still the greatest treasure remains for those who gladly choose you now.
(Repeat refrain)

* Hymn 430 Come Sing, O Church, In Joy! Darwall’s 148th

* Call to Confession Nancy Partridge
L: The proof of God’s amazing love is this: that it was while we were sinners Christ died for us. It is in the name of Jesus, because we have faith in him, that we dare with confidence to approach God. Let us admit our guilt before God.

* Prayer of Confession (unison)
O God, have mercy upon us as we confess our sin. Christ calls us stewards, but we squander your gifts. You give us tasks to perform, yet we do as we please. You send us to minister on behalf of those suffering; we are slow to respond until our own needs are met. You expect us to praise you in all that we do; we take all the credit for those things we do well. Forgive us and help us to be more obedient. (Time for silent confession.)

* Assurance of Forgiveness
L: So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new!

* Response to Our Assurance Gloria Patri #579, The Hymnal
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen, amen.

Scripture Lesson Matthew 25:31-40
31‘When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on the throne of his glory. 32All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats, 33and he will put the sheep at his right hand and the goats at the left. 34Then the king will say to those at his right hand, “Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.” 37Then the righteous will answer him, “Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?” 40And the king will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.”

L: This is the Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to God.

Lent is traditionally a time when disciples renew their commitment to the disciplines of Christian life. Join Jessica Tate for a Lenten exploration of corporate and individual Christian practices that connect us to the larger story of God. This class will meet in room 110 at the 10 o’clock hour beginning Sun, Feb 10.

NEWS OF FPC
The sanctuary choir and the Teen Choir join forces today to present an energetic anthem about spreading the gospel of Christ’s love to every part of the world. Today’s service also features our Instrumental Ensemble playing both on their own and during some of the congregational singing. Their arrangement of When the Saints Go Marching In includes two other famous melodies: Lead On, O King Eternal and We’re Marching to Zion.

THE PRESBYTERY has kept the per capita assessment at $30 per person. Please use the appropriate envelope in your stewardship bundle or indicate per capita on the memo line of your check. Your contribution to this important aspect of church life is appreciated.

THE FPC FAMILY of faith wants to share the joys and sufferings of our members. Please call the office at 703 273-5300 or e-mail office@fairfaxpresby.com to let us know of celebrations or concerns. If an emergency occurs on the weekend, e-mail Henry Brinton and Jessica Tate. FPC sends weekly e-mails listing prayer requests made by members. If you wish to receive this list, please send your e-mail address to Jim Conrad.

THE CHRIST CANDLE is lighted at the start of each service of worship to gather us as a community of faith around Jesus Christ, the light of the world. At the end of the service, the light is carried out of the Sanctuary to remind us that we follow the light of Christ into the world. As we leave this place, we are to be bearers of the light, sharing the good news of God’s grace in the world.

PAPER COPIES of FPC sermons can now be found in the narthex. Sermon texts can also be found online from a link on our home page; a recording of the sermon is also available most Sundays.

FAITH AND FITNESS BOOK: Midlife Men are selling Henry Brinton and Vic Khanna’s new book, The Ten Commandments of Faith and Fitness, to raise funds for their mission work in Honduras. The books are $24 each or two for $40. Pick up an order from the kiosk; place it and your check made out to FPC, with “Midlife Men” on the memo line, in the offering plate or return it to the church office. The books have arrived; you will be contacted with pick up information.
