The Lighting of the Christ Candle

Call to Worship (responsive) Henry Brinton
L: Come to God’s holy mountain.
P: We come into God's presence, bright with the light of faith, hope and love.
L: Come to see the glory of the Lord,
P: A glory shining brightly in the face of Jesus Christ, our companion, Savior and guide.

* Hymn 263 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise St Denio

* Call to Confession
L: Let us come to God and speak honestly about our sin, and our need for forgiveness. Together, let us pray ...

* Prayer of Confession (unison)
Almighty God, we do not trust you as we should. On those rare occasions where we do follow you to the mountain, we lose sight of all that you have given to us. We do not believe that you will guide us or take care of us. We wonder what good is the testimony of a few believers in a world which has so many voices declaring false gospels. We wonder about the effect of a few acts of generosity in a time which is filled with so much unkindness. God, forgive us. Help us to follow your will and your way. Enable us to speak your good news, and show your great love. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
(Time for silent confession.)

* Response to Our Assurance Gloria Patri #579, The Hymnal
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen, amen.

Scripture Lesson Exodus 24:12-18
12The Lord said to Moses, ‘Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.’ 13So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14To the elders he had said, ‘Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them.’15Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16The glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. 17Now the appearance of the glory of the Lord was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights.

L: This is the Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to God.

NEWS OF FPC

A FRESH LOOK at Worship! Why do a call to worship when we’re already sitting in the pews? Why pass offering plates when it would be more efficient to send checks to the office? This Lent, we’ll take a fresh look at the various components of worship. Expect to do one new thing each Sunday and experience how God moves in the
community as we worship. Check the bulletin weekly for information about the worship element we’ll see with fresh eyes and why we do it the way we do. In this season of spiritual renewal, enjoy taking a fresh look at our weekly rituals and deepen your experience of worship.

A FRESH LOOK AT MORNING PRAYER: Morning prayer is often called “Prayers of the People.” It is the moment in worship when we begin to respond to the Word we have heard proclaimed by acknowledging God’s presence in the world in our daily lives. It is this moment in worship when we are most conscious of the needs of the life of our community and the world. To abide in God’s love is to share God’s concern for the world. These prayers are as inclusive as the headlines of the current newspaper and as particular as our congregation to show the wideness of God’s love and the specificity of God’s compassion.

THE FLOWERS in the sanctuary this morning are given by The Maschino Family in celebration of Dr. Robert VanDuyn’s 95th birthday.

The RADIANT RINGERS dedicate their handbell selections to charter member Joe Cardassi. “He was a loyal, enthusiastic Radiant Ringer, and we miss him!” As we approach Valentine’s Day, the Carol Choir sings one of the greatest love songs of all time, Jesus Loves Me. The text of My Singing is a Prayer speaks to the connection between music and prayer. Today we begin using an Introit and Extroit during the lighting and carrying out of the Christ Candle. In a few weeks, the congregation will be invited to sing along!

THE MUSIC VISIONING Task Force has met twice to get input from participants, parents and members. FPC’s congregation has envisioned wonderful things for the music ministry of this church. The Task Force will do its best to incorporate your wishes into the program. Worship Ministry, along with SPAM and senior staff members, are looking at the current structure of the program, considering staffing configurations and assigning responsibility to decide what best fits our financial resources. If you can’t come to a meeting, you can e-mail, write or phone your ideas to Worship Elders Michelle Coon & Serena Mercer.. Watch this bulletin for the date of our next meeting. Worship Ministry thanks all who have attended meetings or contacted us. The Task Force hopes to complete this work by the end of March.

THE FPC FAMILY of faith wants to share the joys and sufferings of our members. Please call the office at 703 273-5300 or e-mail office@fairfaxpresby.com to let us know of celebrations or concerns. If an emergency occurs on the weekend, e-mail Henry Brinton at hgbrinton@aol.com and Jessica Tate at Jessica@fairfaxpresby. com. FPC sends weekly e-mails listing prayer requests made by members. If you wish to receive this list, please send your e-mail address to Jim Conrad at jc@his.com.

THE CHRIST CANDLE is lighted at the start of each service of worship to gather us as a community of faith around Jesus Christ, the light of the world. At the end of the service, the light is carried out of the Sanctuary to remind us that we follow the light of Christ into the world. As we leave this place, we are to be bearers of the light, sharing the good news of God’s grace in the world.

PAPER COPIES of FPC sermons can now be found in the narthex. Sermon texts can also be found online from a link on our home page; a recording of the sermon is also available most Sundays.

SERVICE, STEWARDSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
