The Lighting of the Christ Candle
Call to Worship (responsive) Henry Brinton
L: The world belongs to the Lord.
P: The earth and its people are God's.
L: How good and lovely it is to live together in unity.
P: Love and faith come together; justice and peace join hands.
L: Lord, open our eyes;
P: And our mouths shall proclaim your praise.
#*Hymn 466 O for a Thousand Tongues to Sing Azmon
* Call to Confession
L: Jesus calls us to follow him, but so often we move in another direction. Let us admit our failure to walk in the way of Christ.
* Prayer of Confession (unison)
Lord God, your Son blessed the poor in spirit, but we are more impressed with prestige and power. He said we must purify our hearts, but we are obsessed by appearances. He taught us that we will be comforted when we mourn, yet we curse our bad luck and ask, “Why me?” He said a special joy belonged to the peacemakers, but we resist paying the price of peace. He summoned us to hunger and thirst for righteousness, but we long for the pleasures of the newest toys and technologies. Forgive us, loving God, and return us to the path of Jesus, the way to eternal happiness. Amen. (Time for silent confession)
* Assurance of Forgiveness
L: Jesus calls us to turn around and follow him, and he offers us forgiveness and new life.
P: Thanks be to God for this priceless gift! Amen.
* Response to Our Assurance Gloria Patri #579, The Hymnal
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen, amen.

Scripture Lesson Matthew 4:12-23
12Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the lake, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15‘Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles – 16the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.’ 17From that time Jesus began to proclaim, ‘Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.’18As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the lake – for they were fishermen. 19And he said to them, ‘Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.’ 20Immediately they left their nets and followed him. 21As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. 22Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed him. 23Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to God.

God, we offer you these gifts. May they reach the poor, the lonely, the frightened. May they help the homeless, the hungry, the sick. May they inspire the discouraged, the grieving, the bored. May they reach our neighbors with the message of Jesus Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

NEWS OF FPC
The flowers in the Sanctuary this morning are given by Megan & Jim Lyons in memory of their friends Sora & Ed Gross, Joe Cardassi and Dave Newman.
The sanctuary choir, along with Dr. Kenneth Martin and Dr. Donna Whited, are on their annual retreat at Massanetta Springs this weekend. We are happy to have our own Alex Parrott playing the piano at our 8:45 a.m. Encounter service; special thanks to Tory Waltrip for leading the preparation of the Encounter Praise Team. At the 11:15 a.m. service, we welcome Beverly Dahlin back as our substitute organist. A handbell quartet consisting of Lenny Pacholski, Beth Corry, Karen Hammond and Max Uphaus will play the anthem and offertory.
THE PRESBYTERY has kept the per capita assessment at $30 per person. Please use the appropriate envelope in your stewardship bundle or indicate per capita on the memo line of your check. Your contribution to this important aspect of church life is appreciated.
THE FPC FAMILY of faith wants to share the joys and sufferings of our members. Please call the office at 703 273-5300 or e-mail office@fairfaxpresby.com to let us know of celebrations or concerns. If an emergency occurs on the weekend, e-mail Henry Brinton and Jessica Tate. FPC sends weekly e-mails listing prayer requests made by members. If you wish to receive this list, please send your e-mail address to Jim Conrad.
THE CHRIST CANDLE is lighted at the start of each service of worship to gather us as a community of faith around Jesus Christ, the light of the world. At the end of the service, the light is carried out of the Sanctuary to remind us that we follow the light of Christ into the world. As we leave this place, we are to be bearers of the light, sharing the good news of God’s grace in the world.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for Super Sunday, Feb 3. We will have a single service of worship with a mission focus at 9:30 a.m., followed by the annual meeting of the congregation. Annual reports, financial reports and the 2008 budget will be available in the narthex. Feb 3 is also Boy Scout Sunday. We invite all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and adult leaders to come in uniform and participate in the service.
PAPER COPIES of FPC sermons can now be found in the narthex. Sermon texts can also be found online from a link on our home page; a recording of the sermon is also available most Sundays.
SERVICE, STEWARDSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
THANKS to your generous donations, the FISH Clothing Closet is serving many people in need in our area. We do request that you deliver your donations only during the time the closet is open, from 9 a.m. to noon every Tue & Thur and the first Sat of the month, or make other delivery arrangements by contacting Faye Quesenberry at 703 620-0161 or fwques@aol.com. THE STUDY BUDDY program tutors low-income students every Tue and Thur from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at Christ Lutheran Church in Fairfax City. The program needs tutors and other volunteer assistance. Training will be provided on Tue, Jan 29 at 7:30 p.m. For details please contact Margie Urano.
BLOOD PRESSURE screenings are available in the Narthex extension on the first Sunday of every month. The next screening is scheduled for Sun, Feb 3.
