The Lighting of the Christ Candle
Call to Worship (responsive) Jessica Tate
L: With what shall we come before the Holy One?
P: God has shown us what is good.
L: What does the Lord require of us?
P: To do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with God. Micah 6:6, 8
#*Hymn 563 Lift Every Voice and Sing Lift Every Voice
* Call to Confession
The mystery of faith is not our sins, but that God chooses to redeem us. Placing our trust in the God who sends a Messiah for our sake, let us confess our sins together.
* Prayer of Confession (unison)
O God, we confess there is a great distance between who we are and who you created us to be. We talk when we should listen; we remain silent when we should speak out. We are quick to judge and slow to seek humility. We work to fulfill our own egos rather than living in joyful thanksgiving for your grace and love. Help us to trust your promise of redemption. Help us to live as a light to the world. In the name of Christ, who is the light to the nations, we pray. Amen. (Time for silent confession.)
* Assurance of Forgiveness
L: Great is the mystery of our faith:
P: Jesus died and rose again.
L: Friends, believe the good news:
P: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Alleluia!
* Response to Our Assurance Gloria Patri #579, The Hymnal
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.
Amen, amen.

Scripture Lesson Isaiah 49:1-7
1Listen to me, O coastlands, pay attention, you peoples from far away! The Lord called me before I was born, while I was in my mother’s womb he named me. 2He made my mouth like a sharp sword, in the shadow of his hand he hid me; he made me a polished arrow, in his quiver he hid me away. 3And he said to me, ‘You are my servant, Israel, in whom I will be glorified.’ 4But I said, ‘I have labored in vain, I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my cause is with the Lord, and my reward with my God.’ 5And now the Lord says, who formed me in the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob back to him, and that Israel might be gathered to him, for I am honored in the sight of the Lord, and my God has become my strength – 6he says, ‘It is too light a thing that you should be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the survivors of Israel; I will give you as a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth.’
L: This is the Word of the Lord.
P: Thanks be to God.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

NEWS OF FPC
The flowers in the Sanctuary this morning are given by Nancy & Gordon Kay in memory of Annette Prickett Johnston and in honor of her great grandchildren Bobby and Sally Kay Cooper. The rose on the communion table is in honor of Jack Mercer Dwyer, newborn son of Marji & Terry Dwyer and grandson of Mac & Serena Mercer.
CHRISTMAS JOY OFFERING: An accidental deviation from the procedure used to document sources of donations occurred during the preparation of the collection report for Joy Gifts received on Christmas Eve. No funds were lost, but the identity of donors and the specific amount of their gifts is not available. Donors wishing to have their Joy Gift offering included in their year end statement of giving are asked to contact Robin Meeks in the church office asap.
THE PRESBYTERY has kept the per capita assessment at $30 per person. Please use the appropriate envelope in your stewardship bundle or indicate per capita on the memo line of your check. Your contribution to this important aspect of church life is appreciated.
THE FPC FAMILY of faith wants to share the joys and sufferings of our members. Please call the office at 703 273-5300 or e-mail office@fairfaxpresby.com to let us know of celebrations or concerns. If an emergency occurs on the weekend, e-mail Henry Brinton and Jessica Tate. FPC sends weekly e-mails listing prayer requests made by members. If you wish to receive this list, please send your e-mail address to Jim Conrad.
THE CHRIST CANDLE is lighted at the start of each service of worship to gather us as a community of faith around Jesus Christ, the light of the world. At the end of the service, the light is carried out of the Sanctuary to remind us that we follow the light of Christ into the world. As we leave this place, we are to be bearers of the light, sharing the good news of God’s grace in the world.
PEGGY NEWSOME, our guest oboist at the 8:45 service, is the daughter-in-law of Sanctuary Choir member Ann Slomski. Jim Lawson, a key member of the music program at Grace Presbyterian Church in Springfield, is guest soloist with the Sanctuary Choir at 11:15. Pepper Choplin is a young minister of music in Raleigh, NC. He composed this morning’s exciting anthem in a black gospel style. He also wrote the words, which are a prayer for God to take full control of our lives.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS for Super Sunday, Feb 3. We will have a single service of worship with a mission focus at 9:30 a.m., followed by the annual meeting of the congregation. Feb 3 is also Boy Scout Sunday. We invite all Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, and adult leaders to come in uniform and participate in the service.
CONGRATULATIONS to the FPC members who received Automatic External Defibrillator training recently. Many thanks to Lois Aroian, Bill & Jean Hendricks, Frances, Kristin & Tom Larsen, Fred & Marian Lokay, Megan Lyons, Mike Nelson, Lee Phillips, Dave Ralston, Charles Speer, Rob Updegrove and Jim Wescoat for spending a day training on both AED and CPR.
PAPER COPIES of FPC sermons can now be found in the narthex. Sermon texts can also be found online from a link on our home page; a recording of the sermon is also available most Sundays.
SERVICE, STEWARDSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
FPC YOUTH have officially kicked off their “Be the Change” 30 Hour Famine for the World Vision campaign. The G.R.A.C.E. youth group will fast from April 11 to 13 to raise money for starving children around the world. It is their mission to help prevent the deaths of some of the 29,000 children who die from hunger every day. You can also help by writing a check to FPC with “30 Hour Famine” on the memo line. Stop by their table in the narthex for more information.
MUSIC MINISTRY VISIONING MEETINGS are planned for today, Sunday Jan 20 & Jan 27 at 12:30 p.m. in room 110. The Worship Ministry hopes that members of the music program, parents, congregants, session members and anyone interested in helping develop the vision for the Music Ministry at FPC will attend so that we may have a broad range of input and help finalizing and implementing the vision we develop. If you are unable to attend on either of these dates, please give your ideas to Michelle Coon or Serena Mercer.
THE STEWARDSHIP and Finance Ministry needs a committee of two or three finance-minded individuals to conduct the required annual review of our financial processes. If you can offer a few hours of your time for this important church need, please contact Braden Giordano.
THE 2008 FLOWER CALENDAR is in the narthex. Sundays Jan 27, Feb 3 & Feb 24 are still available, or you may choose a date later in the year. Easy instructions are provided in an envelope under the calendar. This is a way to honor God and remember an important person or event in your life. If you have questions, contact Serena Mercer or Michelle Coon.
BLOOD PRESSURE screenings are available in the Narthex extension on the first Sunday of every month. The next screening is scheduled for Sun, Feb 3.
ON THE CALENDAR
Basic Bible meets every Friday from 11 to noon in the parlor. Join us in this weekly study of the Sunday scripture lessons. The class is reprised every Sunday at the 10 a.m. church school hour.
MIDDAY PRAYER is held Fridays from noon to 12:30 in the sanctuary for all who want to bring their joys and concerns to God.
