Between July 2003 and September 2004, we celebrated the semi centennial of a community of faith that has been such a comfort, challenge and inspiration to us. Since Old Testament times, the Jubilee year has been observed as a time of rest and restoration and joyful celebration.

Semi Centennial Moments

July 2003 marked the anniversary of the first meeting of the group that organized the church. Observances began with Sunday morning "Semi centennial Moments" that brought our history to life.

Remembering and Celebrating

Celebrating Charter of Fairfax Presbyterian Church

City of Fairfax 4th of July Parade

An FPC float was represented in the 2003 Fairfax City Fourth of July parade.
Thank you Charlie Brown for organizing this activity!

Sunday, September 26, 2004

Events and activities will be held throughout the year, and our observances will conclude with a celebration of the chartering of the church.

We look forward to many former members returning for this service of thanksgiving to God, followed by a catered luncheon.

Jubilee!

James Fahs, Chairman, 50th Anniversary Committee

Excitement is mounting as we turn the corner into September, and approach the celebration of FPC's 50th anniversary on Sunday, September 26. If you haven't turned in your reservation for the luncheon at the Waterford at Fair Oaks, please do so immediately. It promises to be a great chance to see old friends, make new ones, and enjoy a family-friendly program.

There is so much that I am looking forward to as the anniversary approaches:

  • An FPC youth reunion at Kutner Park on Saturday, September 25 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., for youths from the 1980s era. Thanks to Katherine Thompson Garstang, Jennifer Carlson Burns, and Diane Moore Bertotti for taking the initiative and setting this up. Contact kgarstan@cstone.net for more info.
  • A contemporary Jubilee Service on Sunday, September 26 at 8:45 a.m., with an anniversary theme. This will be followed by a special education hour at 10 a.m. for our young people. (No Fourth Sunday Communion will be offered at 8:45on the 26th.)
  • An anniversary service on Sunday, September 26 at 11:15 a.m., with brass, bells, pipe organ, the Sanctuary Choir, and the introduction of a brand-new hymn commissioned for our 50th anniversary. We will also hear a sermon by one of the great preachers of our era, Nathan Baxter, former dean of the National Cathedral. Leaders of worship will include our Pastor Emeritus Henry Baumann and special guests from National Capital Presbytery.
  • A celebratory luncheon at the Waterford at Fair Oaks following our 11:15 service. Sandy and Jim Speer have selected a delicious menu for us to enjoy, and a program will be offered that will help us to remember the past and celebrate the future. Mary Wade will be our Mistress of Ceremonies and will introduce our charter members. Henry Baumann will offer the luncheon blessing and James Fahs will contribute some reflections and recognitions. Phil Beauchene will bring us some unique anniversary messages, and Carrie Yearick will lead a recognition of the children of the church. It promises to be a marvelous celebration for members young and old.

I am personally grateful to everyone who has worked so hard over the past two years to plan these anniversary activities. James Fahs has been an excellent chair of the 50th Anniversary Committee, and has led a great team made up of Fran Larsen, Jerry Parrott, Charlie Brown, Joe Cardassi, Jack Foster, Rex Stouten, Esther Elstun, Doris Naeher, Judy Chambers, Kevin Strickler, Jill Kritzer, Marilyn Cromartie, Sandy and Jim Speer, Nancy Kay, Nancy Ann Cook, Joyce Strickler, Shelby Will, Frances Bowen, Serena Mercer, Ken Bingham, Brenda Weiser, Andrew Dobos, Jim Conrad, Ed Gross, Lou Major, Val Bruton, Fred Lokay, and Robin McCord as well as a host of volunteers who have offered our weekly Semicentennial Moments. When you see these dedicated people, please offer them your thanks!

See you on the 26th, Henry
